Summary on Grant Application Form
Intelligent Environments are becoming one of the hot topics for industrial and academic research. Intelligent Environments are public and private spaces such as cars, shopping malls, work, homes and even our own bodies which respond thoughtfully to our needs. Such environments are constituted by numerous networked embedded computing appliances offering functionalities related to the individual appliances in addition to the range of collective functionalities offered through communities of coordinating appliances. Commonly such spaces would contain embedded intelligent agents enabling these environments to personalise themselves in response to the occupant's presence and behaviour as well as aiding the normal activities related to work, education, entertainment or healthcare. Over the last decade a number of research areas have contributed to the concept of intelligent environments, such areas include ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing, embedded intelligence, intelligent user interfaces, human factors, intelligent buildings, mobile communications, domestic robots, intelligent sensors and ambient intelligence. The international workshop on Intelligent Environments will be held at the University of Essex on the 28th and 29th of June 2005. It will bring together researchers from across the world to present their latest research and to discuss future directions in this area. The workshop aims to bring together researchers from both industry and academia from the various disciplines contributing to the area on Intelligent Environments which will help to stimulate research and break down barriers between the different disciplines in both industry and academia. This will help to ensure the UK is recognised as one of the foremost centres for such research by providing a forum to explore the exciting opportunities that arise from working and collaborating across disciplinary boundaries in the area of Intelligent Environments. In addition, this event will provide an excellent platform to launch the new SRIF funded intelligent Flat (iFlat), a pervasive computing test-bed dedicated to Intelligent Environments research which will be officially opened during this workshop. The workshop will be supported by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the University of Essex, as part of the University's 40th Anniversary celebrations. In addition, the workshop will be supported by British Telecom who will lead the industrial track of the workshop. The workshop is planned to be a two day event where the first day will feature keynote presentations from prominent national and international researchers, from both industry and academia, speaking on a range of disciplines in the Intelligent Environments area. The second day will feature parallel sessions to present the peer reviewed research and application papers. At the end of the second day, we will organise a Doctoral colloquium for PhD studentsThe workshop will be a non profit making event and the requested EPSRC funding will enable us to strengthen the workshop program together with bringing down the costs of registration and therefore make it possible for more people to attend, in particular students. This will lead to the furtherance of this UK initiative to enable a longer term self financing big event as the workshop has the potential to become an annual International Conference. The requested funds will be used to: 1) Fund PhD students to attend the workshop. This will provide them with an excellent training opportunity to develop their research and to gain a valuable insight into the wider perspective of research and development in this area. 2) Invite international keynote speakers. This will help to maximise the benefits the workshop will bring to UK research as it will enable the UK researchers to get direct exposure to important international research and development in the field. In addition, it will enable the UK to expose both its researchers and a unique world-class S
