Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim is to perform a feasibility study into a novel remotely deployable defect detection system, which uses a pulsed laser as both a transient thermal source and an ultrasonic wave source. The NDE techniques that will be studied are laser-generated transient thermography and simultaneously lasergenerated ultrasonics. A remotely deployable thermography system has become a realistic possibility with the very recent availability of very small commercial infrared cameras. A significant part of the project will be an assessment of the capabilities of these new cameras for NDE. The main applications for this proposed approach are for problems requiring remote access. The target defects include stress-corrosion cracks, pitting corrosion, inter-granular corrosion and fatigue cracks. These samples will be provided by our industrial collaborators ; Rolls-Royce, BNFL and RWE Innogy and have a value of several hundred thousand pounds. At this stage we are requesting limited funds to support a feasibility study for one year, at the end of which we may submit a second proposal to extend the work using supporting information obtained from this stage of the project.
