Summary on Grant Application Form |
he Loughborough IMRC is the largest with a 5 year budget of 14.2 million. Over 100 projects have been funded and currently over 60 of these are running with over 80 contract research staff_ These projects involve 40 academic members of staff from 8 different departments that are based in 10 research groups. The fact that so many departments and groups are involved makes managing the IMRC activity particularly time consuming. Communication of information within the IMRC is much more time consuming in such an organisation, unlike some of the other IMRC's where there is a much smaller group of academics involved in a single department or even research group. The management of a much smaller IMRC can be done on a very informal basis as a single research group or department is likely to have existing agreed targets. However, when multiple departments or research groups are involved the situation is very different and everyone is then 'fighting for their fair share'! This therefore requires decisions to be taken on a much more open but format basis with frequent opportunities for consultation. The time required to undertake this is extensive. The additional funding will allow the Director to concentrate on managing the overall activities of the IMRC and to determine the overall strategy and direction. A major activity will be oversight of the Grand Challenge process and an international quality review of the current research portfolio.
