Summary on Grant Application Form
Cervical smear sample screening has successfully reduced the mortality rate due to cervical cancer. However, any screening programme depends on correct idenification of abnormal samples and there is scope for improvement. The crux of this proposal is the hypothesis that if the visual, microscopic examination of a smear sample is accompanied by an auditory representation of the same data, rates of correct diagnoses will increase. The project will require the development of an appropriate mapping from smear data to sound. Then tests will be carried out to measure the effectiveness of the technique.
