Carbon nanotubes and fullerenes - both renowned for their remarkable properties - are often thought of as layers of a hypothetical material graphene rolled into spheres and hollow cylinders. In its free form, graphene is believed to be unstable and not to exist. We have discovered a way of making planar graphene films, which are just a few atomic layers thick but remain metallic, continuous and of remarkably high quality. This is a new material that has never been made or studied experimentally before. In short, the developed films could be viewed as if millions of carbon nanotubes were somehow unfolded and stitched together and, yet, their remarkable transport properties were preserved. During the last year, we have shown that highmobility two-dimensional electron and hole gases can be formed in planar graphene by applying gate voltage and demonstrated a ballistic field-effect transistor based of this semimetal.This grant application is to develop our initial findings into a fully-fledged research programme, building upon our current competitive edge in this emerging research area (a number of groups already follow our steps and started working on planar graphene). We propose to pursue several research directions described in the Objectives, which we believe are most promising and, at the same time, are within our area of expertise.
