This research project is centred around a group of three compounds, sarains A, B and C, which were isolated in the mid-1980s from a sponge found in the Bay of Naples. These compounds have antibacterial, insecticidal and antitumour properties, but cannot be obtained in sufficient quantities for extensive biological testing.The three compounds have a complex and previously unprecedented chemical structure, which has served as both a challenge and an inspiration to several synthetic chemistry groups around the world. In this project, we aim to develop new chemical methods which will allow us to synthesise the sarain structure in the laboratory in a more efficient and concise fashion than those previously reported. The planned chemistry involves the use of highly reactive species known as carbenes, a type of structure with which our group has developed some expertise. These new methods, once developed, should be applicable to the synthesis of a wide range of chemical compounds besides the sarain alkaloids.The research will be carried out over a two year period in the Chemistry department of University College London, by a postdoctoral research worker in the group of Dr. Mike Porter.
