Summary on Grant Application Form
There is a great deal of interest at present in using the spin of electrons as the active variable in a semiconductor device. At present the basic properties of appropriate semiconductors are still under study in order to determine the material characteristics which lead to the desired behaviour. An important way of finding out how spins move in a semiconductor is to probe them optically, but existing methods are hard to apply routinely. Here we propose to develop a new technique, which is still complicated, but which should have higher sensitivity and be quicker to use than previous methods. The project seeks to prove the new approach, and then to apply it to several test structures whose properties are of great interest.
