Summary on Grant Application Form |
A variety of commercial applications as diverse as lighting, surface modification and sterilisation use electrical discharges through gases as sources of ionized species and chemical radicals. This medium is referred to as a plasma. A feature common to most plasmas of this type is that they are far from thermal equilibrium ('non-thermal') with electrons, ions and neutral species being characterised by widely different temperatures. This proposal aims to form a network of UK university groups who share an interest in the study and use of technologically relevant plasmas. In establishing the network the intention is to co-ordinate research so that UK plasma scientists can more effectively operate on the international stage. The network offers novel opportunities for cost-effective, collaborative use of the facilities and skills that are currently dispersed around the country. By this means we plan to build a coherent portfolio of UK research in non-thermal plasmas.
