The Chemistry Department at Warwick requests 250K to support a 24 month programme to pump-prime highly speculative research. The disbursement of these funds will be controlled by the Warwick Chemistry Research Committee (CRC) which has responsibility for developing and overseeing the implementation of the department's research strategy. The CRC will provide a further 50K from its own resources to support this adventure initiative. Of the total 300K fund, an initial allocation of ca. 180K will be made to two speculative projects (A and B) that require a medium-term commitment: invention of a new method for the study of interfacial dynamics in condensed phase systems, and a new approach to the design of secondary interactions in enantioselective catalysis. A strategy for risk mitigation of this part of the fund has been developed. Many further adventurous research ideas are emerging across the department, and examples of these are described briefly. The balance of the fund will be allocated by the CRC to such shorter-term projects on the basis of the following criteria: (i) level of adventure; (ii) feasibility that a fundable EPSRC proposal will subsequently arise; (iii) availability of suitable personnel, ideally from another research group; (iv) cost issues.
