Direct Metal Deposition by laser (DMD) can be used to manufacture aerospace components from high performance superalloys such as Inconel 718 and Waspalloy more economically than conventional forging or machining techniques. It also avoids potential problems caused microstructural discontinuity near welded joints.However, nickel superalloy DMD or microstructure formation and DMD residual stress formation have not been investigated. Additionally, microstructural deterioration and thermal fatigue of the superalloys under the conditions they experience within a turbine engine combustion chamber are problems with no current solutions.The proposed research will combine modelling of the DMD process with research into Inconel 718 and Waspalloy microstructure. Ways to set microstructural characteristics via DMD process parameters will be developed. The aim is aeroengine components with custom distributed properties and increased resistnace to thermal fatigue and microstructural deterioration with thermal cycling.
