Summary on Grant Application Form |
Advances in approximation theory, numerical integration, differential and integral equations are most often driven by applications, and smooth manifolds, such as the sphere, are natural settings for many mathematical models. Indeed, in recent years, such modelshave arisen naturally in areas diverse as atmospheric circulation modelling, gravitational potential theory, oceanography, mathematical finance, scattering of sound, satellite data fitting and partial differential equations. In this project we seek to furher develop the mathematical theory of approximation and integration on smooth manifolds, and apply the theory to the investigation of the solution of partial differential equations on such manifolds. We would like to develop practical algorithms in this regard which could be easily implemented by practitioners in application areas such as those mentioned above.
