Microporous materials are solids that contain interconnected pores of molecular dimensions (i.e. less than 2 nm). Such materials possess large surface areas and are of great technological importance for adsorption and heterogeneous catalysis. Over the past few years, we have introduced a novel concept called polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) involving the preparation of macromolecules whose microporosity is intrinsic to their highly rigid and contorted molecular structures. PIMs offer high surface areas with the nature of the accessible surface and its physical properties being determined by the chosen combination of monomeric precursors. However, the PIMs prepared to date are amorphous disordered materials. We propose to exploit the efficient chemistry used to make PIMs and develop concepts derived from the synthesis of cyclic oligomers and macrocycles, to prepare ordered, nanoporous organic materials. Our target materials are highly porous covalent networks that consist of a 2D molecular honeycomb and a 3D Laves network both derived from novel triptycene-based monomers. The project will include a comprehensive investigation of the structural properties of the network polymers using poder X-ray diffraction, gas adsorption and solid state NMR.
