Summary on Grant Application Form
THIS PROJECT IDENTIFIES THE UNDESIRED BIAS OSCILLATIONS AS RELAXATION OR SWITCHING OSCILLATIONS THAT ARE OF A DIFFERENT NATURE AND INDEPENDENT OF THE EXPECTED OSCILLATIONS ARISING FROM THE DEVICE'S DIFFERENTIAL NEGATIVE RESISTANCE. ON THE EVIDENCE OF INITIAL SIMULATIONS, AN ANALYSIS AND DESIGN METHODOLOGY IN THE TIME DOMAIN IS MORE APPROPRIATE AND WILL BE ADOPTED FOR THIS WORK. NOVEL BIAS CIRCUITS AND OSCILLATOR CONFIGURATIONS FULLY EXPLOITING THE DUAL NATURE OF RTD OSCILLATIONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED. OUTPUT POWER LEVELS IN THE MILLI-WATT RANGE ARE EXPECTED.THE PROPOSED WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT THE NANOELECTRONICS RESEARCH CENTRE, DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW. THE CENTRE BOASTS OF EXTENSIVE EXPERTISE AND RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE FOR NANO-TECHNOLOGY AND ULTRA-FAST ELECTRONICS. A TOTAL OF 115,726 FROM EPSRC WILL BE REQUIRED TO UNDERTAKE THE INVESTIGATIONS.
