This project is to exploit the strong solvatochromism of the [Ru(bipy)(CN)4]2- unit by using it as a switching mechanism in polynuclear complexes, and to exploit the IR activity of the CN ligands as reporter groups for fast time-resolved infra-red (TRIR) spectroscopic measurements. Three important properties of [Ru(bipy)(CN)4]2- vary over a wide range according to solvent composition: (i) the Ru(II)-Ru(III) redox potential in the ground state, which varies over a range of ca. 1 V; (ii) the energy of the MLCT excited state, which varies between ca. 12000 and 16000 cm-1 as a function of solvent; and (iii) the excited-state redox potential, which means that the excited state of the complex has a different reducing ability (spanning a range of ca. 0.6 V) in different solvents. Chromophore/quencher complexes will be prepared in which the solvent dependence of the [Ru(bipy)(CN)4]2unit is exploited to modulate inter-component photo-induced energy or electron-transfer; TRIR measurements will be used to monitor the movement and distribution of excited-state energy or electrons between the components.
