Product quality specifications of particulate systems such as emulsions and slurries, are based both on chemical and physical characteristics viz. composition, particle size, shape, size distribution, surface charge etc. Therefore in the chemical processing of such systems, continuous monitor these parameters is required to ensure optimal operation to maximize yield and reduce variability in quality by providing the ability to detect deviat from target quality and take timely corrective actions- This will lead to enormous savings by reducing incidences where products fail to meet qualii specifications or targeted yields- Spectroscopic measurements using the visible-near IR region of light contain information on both concentration < particle characteristics- The proposed research will focus on the challenge of separating the scattering and absorption effects and then extracting pertinent physical and chemical information by adopting a hybrid approach which will make use of fundamental light propagation models andmultivariate statistical modelling techniques- The methodology for characterization that is developed through this research will be part of a measurement-algorithm platform for simultaneous online characterization of physical and chemical property distributions of particulate systems-
