Summary on Grant Application Form
The research involves the the investigation of a new technique for the modification of ion-exchange materials. Using an electrochemical process, preliminary work by the applicants has shown that it is possible to drive the ion-exchange of a material by applying a potential difference across a pressed disc of the solid. By varying the 'donor solution' and the voltage different ions can be transported into and out of the structure. The proposed research is to examine the fundamental ion-exchange processes that are occuring during the electrochemically driven ion transfer by comparing measured ionexchange isotherms with those for standard chemical treatments.Coupled to the fundamental studies are the applications of the technique to produce ion-exchanged zeolites. Direct exchange of protons into zeolitic structures will be targetted along with the removal of potassium from zeolite L and the production of materials containing mixed ions. This will highlight the efficacy of the technique by producing important materials which have not been synthesised hitherto, or which require several steps to manufacture.
