Summary on Grant Application Form
Funding is requested from the EPSRC to support a 6-month research programme which will enable the continuation of the development and exploitation of environmental polarised NEXAFS spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. To this aim a dedicated environmental end station has been built and commissioned and now enables collection of NEXAFS spectra around the ultra-soft X-ray region (C, N and O K-edges) for both electron yield (EY) and fluorescence yield (FY) measurements over a pressure range of 10-4 to 10-10 mbar and temperature range 150 - 500 K.Using the environmental chamber two inter-related work programmes are proposed: (a) the orientational characteristics of dyes on different cellulose substrates;(b) structural ordering of tailor-made amino acid additive species on host single crystal surfaces.
