The proposed research will1 analyse the necking and break-up of a shaped charge jet using models from both fluid mechanics and solid mechanics. The effects of stretching and tapering on a symmetric jet will be treated as perturbations to those models. Asymmetric jet formation will also be analysed2 analyse the penetration of a target by a shaped charge jet, including the initial impact, continuous penetration, the impact of particles on the side of the crater, and the break-out at the rear of the target.In each area, realistic mathematical models will be written down, and the dominant physical mechanisms identified. Then asymptotic analysis will be used to obtain appropriate reduced models, and those reduced models will be solved numerically and validated against experimental data and the predictions of more elaborate codes.
