Summary on Grant Application Form
This work is concerned with exploiting new or under-explored synthetic methodologies for ternary solid nitrides. New materials will be synthesised by reacting intermetallic compounds with a source of nitrogen or by growing nitride crystals in molten metal fluxes. These methodologies are complementary to one another and will be compared with more traditional solid state synthetic approaches to nitride synthesis. Target materials have been chosen for their potentially useful electronic or optical properties and the synthetic part of the programme will be supported by feedback from the results of structural and electronic characterisation of new compounds using a range of techniques. Nitride chemistry is a growing area of solid state chemistry, and this work is expected to yield compounds with new structure types and properties not found in the chemistry of analogous oxides or sulfides.
