The UK Government is working towards a target of renewable energy providing 10% of UK electricity supplies by 2010 with 10 GW of CHP by the same date. Depending on the load factor assumed, this will require the installation of up to 15 GW of generation capacity on to distribution networks (i.e. at voltages of 132 kV and below). Under present conditions the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) anticipate that they can integrate only a much more limited capacity of generation. This reflects the historic, 'passive' configuration of the distribution system. To help meet the Government targets, this project proposes the integration of embedded plant by developing new control and management systems together with accompanying commercial arrangements and economic incentives. This project will involve the investigation and development of alternative ancillary services mechanisms for the operation of distribution networks, with high penetrations of embedded generation, including techniques for evaluation and scheduling of ancillary service contracts. The development of a distributed DMS system and accompanying applications as well as the investigation of alternative protection schemes necessary for supporting the operation of active distribution networks in real time will be a fundamental part of this work.
