Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme relies on a strong interaction between the Manchester and Hull groups, in collaboration with our industrial partners. The overall objective of the programme is to address key issues related to molecular design and synthesis of novel liquid crystalline materials through a better understanding of the structures of the phases and devices. The characterisation programme will employ conventional and resonant x-ray scattering experiments together with optical and electro-optical measurements to investigate the properties of novel liquid crystalline materials in thin-film and device geometries. We will also develop possible structural models that can be compared to the optical data we record. The results of the structural characterisation will be fed back into the chemistry programme at Hull to enable materials optimisation for new applications.
