Oscillator dynamics and the provision of spatial coherence of radiation from a large size active medium is a challenging problem in modem physics and is relevant to all Lasers and Masers. To solve this problem we plan to use two-dimensional distributed feedback which may be realised in multi-periodical Bragg structures. Transverse electromagnetic energy coupling in these novel Bragg structures may provide spatial coherence of radiation when the transverse size of the active medium exceeds the radiation wavelength by more than 3 orders of magnitude. We propose to use a relativistic electron beam as the active medium and pass this electron beam through a spatially periodic magnetic field causing it to interact with anelectromagnetic wave. A series otcalculations have shown that two-dimensional feedback can be used to provide mode selection over the longitudinal and transverse co-ordinates and is attractive for use in the extraction of electromagnetic radiation from a powerful high currentrelativistic electron beam of annular geometry. We propose experimental investigation of two-dimensional feedback in a high gain. co-axial Free-electron Maser oscillator resulting in the first observation of single mode excitation in a system when the diameter of the gain medium is ten times larger than the radiation wavelength.
