Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal provides a new direction for research into optical analogues of quantum chaotic systems. The first part of the proposal is to model wave propagation at optical frequencies in graded refractive index (GRIN) micro-cavities with angled ends. These cavities can exhibit mixed stable l chaotic geometrical ray dynamics, which is an exciting area of quantum chaos research as it is beyond the scope of current theories. A key aim is to interpret laser transmission spectra of real devices fabricated from GRIN material that will be measured by experimental colleagues in Nottingham and Sydney. The analysis of these results will require the development of new computational techniques with greatly improved efficiency and accuracy at optical wavelengths. Combining new computational approaches pioneered in our current research with existing numerical methods will enable me to produce the necessary advances. I will use the resulting methods to analyse the wave properties of qualitatively new chaotic optical systems with important technological applications that have recently been highlighted in the popular science press. The proposal will address fundamental questions in ray and wave chaos, and will produce new efficient computational techniques, which will be of benefit across a wide range of physics communities.
