The ultimate goal of this research is to develop single-transverse-mode fibre structures for ultracold atom applications. The work proposed herein constitutes our part of a collaborative program with the Ultracold Atom Group at the University of Sussex who will perform atom-guiding experiments in the structures developed. The project would help ensure that the UK remains a major player in the rapidly emerging area of guided atom optics.The project emphasis is on magnetic confinement of atoms in fibre structures and represents a completely new, but highly promising concept in atom-fibre research. We propose to develop capillary fibres incorporating fine internal metal wires that can be used to generate an intense magnetic (quadrupole) field in the core region. This field can be used to confine atoms. Sussex have indeed recently succeeded in demonstrating multimode guidance in such a structure validating the concept, and calculations show that single-mode operation should be achievable for physically-reasonable structure dimensions and current levels. Critical issues relating to thermal management, electrode connection, beam-brightening and mode-coupling will be addressed within the project.This research could lead to a major breakthrough in the field of atom-optics, offering unprecedented scope for extending the study and applications of ultracold atoms.
