Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to study the properties of magnetic nano-elements formed by patterning multilayer (and, to a much lesser extent, single layer) films into the nanometric regime. The multilayers to be patterned will primarily be materials displaying enhanced magnetoresistance originating from either the giant magnetoresistance or the junction magnetoresistance effects. Hence spin-valve, spin-tunnel junction and unpinned sandwich films are all of particular interest. Elements will be fabricated using state-of-the-art electron beam lithography, lift-off and reactive ion etching facilities. The principal experimental technique used to study their properties will be Lorentz microscopy in the transmission electron microscope. Additional information will be obtained using magnetic force microscopy whilst micromagnetic modelling will be used to help guide our choice of element geometry and to assist interpretation of results where rapid changes, too fast to observe directly, are involved. Both technological and scientific motivating factors underlie the project. They are the need to understand the properties of ultra-small magnetic elements, a prerequisite if the phenomenal growth being experienced by the magnetic recording industry is to continue at its present exceptional rate, and the possibility of discovering new and exciting physical effects as element dimensions fall below critical magnetic length scales.
