Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is the determination of matrix (using quantitative birefringence) and fibre (using Raman Spectroscopy) strains in single short, fragmented and multiple fibre composites with deposited distinct or graded inter-phases. The role of plasticity in matrices and inter-phases will be examined using plasma polymerisation and direct coating techniques. This will allow the properties of the coating to be varied in a systematic way.The validation and development of strain-transfer model will be undertaken using available analytical models and also finite element analysis. The experimental results will be compared with the model predictions allowing modification and improvement of these mathematical techniques. The findings from model composites will be used in scale-up to high fibre, volume fraction composites allowing the influence of the observed micro-mechanical failure processes to be assessed.
