We will develop a robust protocol for atom transfer radical polymerisation in aqueous media. This will allow the synthesis of controlled structure water-soluble (co)polymers directly in aqueous media for the first time. Given the well-documented tolerance of ATRP towards monomer functionality and protic impurities, this environmentally-friendly chemistry is likely to be attractive for industrial syntheses. Target hydrophilic monomer classes will include acrylamides, oglio(ethylene oxide) methacrylates and sulfobetaines. In addition, N-vinylimidazole and certain vinyl ethers will also be examined. Hydroxy- and PEG-based (macro)initiators will be evaluated, in addition to the use of conventional azo or persulfate free radical initiators via so-called 'reverse' ATRP. The possibility of 'ligandless' ATRP will be explored. The resulting copolymers will have well-defined block or statistical copolymer architectures and will be examined for their aqueous micellation behaviour and dispersant performance, respectively. Molecular weight distributions will be assessed by aqueous GPC and copolymer compositions will be determined using Departmental NMR spectroscopy facilities. Finally, Dr. Lloyd (Univ. of Brighton) will assess the biocompatibility of films and coatings based on the sulfobetaine (co)polymers.
