In relation to partial differential equations, in particular those originating in mechanical applications, the term classical spectral problems is normally used to describe those related to self-adjoint boundary value problems for elliptic systems of equations in smooth bounded domains. Such problems possess nice discrete spectra and have been attracting attention of mathematicians since Lord Rayleigh. As the most obvious examples, one can mention the Dirichlet or Neumann problems for the Helmholtz equation (acoustic vibration) or the clamped or free boundary problems for the Lame system (elastic vibration).By a loose term non-classical spectral problems in the title of this proposal we understand spectral boundary value problems for systems of partial differential equations which do not satisfy one or more of the conditions of self-adjointedness, ellipticity, or smoothness of the domain. We intend to study several such spectral problems, including problems for the Lame equations of elasticity with the spectral parameter in boundary conditions on Lipschitz boundary or interface; singular perturbations of spectra for domains with fractal boundary or interfaces; non-self-adjoint Douglis-Nirenberg elliptic problems of hydrodynamics and hydroelasticity.
