The principal scientific aim of the research is to develop a flexible and validated model of secondary melting processing that combines a macroscopic description of heat and fluid flow with a prediction of the evolution of microstructure in the ingots. The technological aim is to predict both the intrinsic microstructures developed by the alloys during secondary melting processing and the ability of the processes to remove extraneous features, such as ceramic inclusions, during processing.The specific technical objective of the proposal investigation is to couple macroscopic process models to mesoscopic and microscopic models to predict a range of macro- and microstructural features of the secondary melting processes including: Macro-segregation/freckle formation; solidification microstructures and micro-segregation; the thermal history and residence time of inclusions and the phases formed and solid state transformations they undergo. The model will be validated against well controlled and instrumented experimental configurations including benchtop directional solidification, pilot scale remelting facilities, and full scale VAR billets. By instrumenting and modelling the process, a better understanding of the materials behaviour will be gained, providing the insight required for the development of new alloys that can be processed by cost effective routes.
