Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to develop new apparatus to extend the range of applications of microwave heating to the synthesis of bulk solids and fine particles as well as processing of particles.A new pressure cell with a tunable microwave source will be constructed to enable high-temperature synthesis under a range of hydrostatic pressures, and applied to pressing problems in oxide, nitride and hydrothermal synthesis.Aerosol spray pyrolysis apparatus will be built to develop new routes to fine powders and modified to enable chemical vapour deposition assisted by a microwave-induced plasma. We intend to use this apparatus to develop new routes to coating particles, and also to study their electronic and magnetic properties.
