Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for an interdisciplinary project to investigate the production of novel, re-useable, activated carbon materials from waste and low value fibre by-products. The manufacturing techniques appropriate for these materials will be optimised with the objective of arriving at an economically viable single pass pyrolysis and activation methodoogy using inherently clean technology. An interdisciplinary research team with industrial collaboration enusres that the research will be well managed and focused towards the requirements of industrial end users. The research has three strands:i) Investigation of pyrolysis process and conditions and fibre pre-treatment (mechanical and chemical) on the properties of subsequent activated carbon fibre productsii) Examination of a range of pre-formed materials presented for pyrolysis/activation so that materials with novel morphology and structure will be producediv) Evaluation of the technical feasibility, economic advantages and environmental implications of industrial manufacture and utilisation of these re-usable materials
