Summary on Grant Application Form |
To investigate the combination of single electron charging with sub-micron micro-mechanical structures. To use a low temperature scanning tunneling tip positioned above a 10nm diameter metal island which is defined to be on the end of a sub-micron cantilever arm. At low temperatures the vibrational frequencies of the arm are quantized. The quantum vibrations of the arm will be combined with the single electron charging of the metal island to generate an artificial electron phonon interaction. This arrangement will be investigated as a technique for developing a current standard.
