Near - filed optical microscopy (NFOM) permits the collection of light emitted from photoluminescent and electroluminescent structures to be made from regions down to a small fraction of a wavelength (better than l/20). Use of nanofabrication force sensor/metallic apertures permits high optical throughput and reliable topographic control, with controlled, reproducible and high spatial resolution. Factors limiting the performance of quantum-confined luminescent structures are statially defined (e.g. monolayer fluctuations in growth, non radiative trapping centres, exciton diffusion lengths); NFOM gives direct spatial measurement of characteristic length and energy scales for direct feedback to growers and fabricators.
