This research programme relates to the establishment of technology for realising high-power, high-brightness sources with fibre optic beam delivery for applications in medicine and laser marking. The chosen method employs multiple semiconductor injection lasers to pump a fibre laser intermediary which will convert the incident power with high efficiency into a compact high radiance beam at an eye-safe wavelength.The development of a high radiance source at 1.55*m is the main objective of the programme. In order to achieve this we will develop i) a highly efficient cladding pumped erbium-doped fibre capable of CW operation with >5W output power and ii) a pulsed version giving 10mJ pulses at 100Hz repetition frequency.A secondary objective will be to use the 1.55*m fibre laser as a secondary pump source for a Tm3+ fibre laser, thereby converting the wavelength with near quantum-limited efficiency to the 2.0*m region, further increasing the range of medical procedures addressable with fibre laser tool.The programme will benefit from collaboration with GEC Marconi Materials Technology, who will develop diode pump sources at 980nm and DIOMED UK Ltd, who will develop the multiple source to fibre coupling scheme. Both collaborating companies (GEC through their subsidiary Videojet) aim to include the technology in their product range once the research phase is complete.
