Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will result in a tool for use with NDT facilities, to enable the user to deduce the sub-surface dimensions of the crack given the nominal stress field and surface-breaking length only. This will be achieved by developing the eigenstrain analysis technique to permit the deduction of crack shapes giving a constant-K crack front. Experimental work will enable the validity of the assumption that this criterion accurately predicts the crack shape to be tested. This work is important as compressive surface residual stresses promote enhanced subsurface crack growth with little visible growth.
