Summary on Grant Application Form
The main aim of the project is to understand how the structure of the interface controls the deformation and fracture properties of metal/ceramic laminates. This will be done by studying the effects of the thickness, roughness and strength of the metal interlayers. The nature of the interfacial cracking will be examined under different stress states, as well as the macroscopic laminate behaviour. The effects of residual stresses will also be studied. In parallel with this experimental work, numerical models will be developed using finite difference and finite element approaches. The results should point the way towards optimisation of a novel class of materials.
