Summary on Grant Application Form |
Body Parts: New for Old will be an exciting and informative exhibition. Based at the Thackray Museum (Leeds), the exhibition will explore engineering along with the science and technology used in the development of replacement body parts, for example, hip and knee replacements. Basic engineering principles (materials, friction, forces and motion) will be explored in innovative and interactive ways. Relationships between biology, engineering and design will be revealed and the impact that these new body parts can have on peoples lives demonstrated. The exhibition will have a general appeal but will also have close links to the National Curriculum. To support the exhibition an educational pack will be created aimed at secondary schools. It will provide activities linking the exhibition and Key Stage 3/4 Science of the National Curriculum (e.g. SC1 Science Enquiry, SC3 Materials and their Properties, SC4 Physical Processes). A series of summer workshops linked to the exhibition will be held for the general public but particularly targeted to young people in the socially excluded local area in order to widen participation.
