Given the need for (a) self-consistent scenarios for a number of variables (precipitation, mean temperature, diurnal temperature range, vapour pr( /relative humidity, sunshine duration, wind speed and potential evapotranspiration), and (c) sub-hourly precipitation scenarios, (in the form of mean changes, time series and probability distributions) the most appropriate approaches to scenario construction involve the development and applica - two (i.e., daily and hourly) weather generators (WGs) available in the Climatic Research Unit; and,- the Generalised Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulses (GNSRP) model for the construction of specialised rainfall scenarios by the Water Resource Systems Research Laboratory.The current generation of regional climate models, such as HadRM3, neglect urbanized portions of the land surface, thus ignoring potential chant, the urban heat island effect and the impacts of additional heat sources in cities. This problem will be addressed by the Hadley Centre using a new representation of urban areas in general circulation model simulations of climate change.
