Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research programme is aimed at addressing generic research issues that are common to a number of industrial sectors: aerospace, automotive, chemical, energy, and mechanical engineering. The overall research aim of the proposed research Centre is to develop a 'Virtual Prototyping Tools' that will allow engineering (i.e. aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, process industry) companies to implement a concurrent engineering philosophy within their organisations. We define virtual prototyping as the creation and use of electronic product descriptions within a virtual environment, for performing design operations and analysis that consider all aspects of the product life cycle. Our vision of this virtual prototyping environment is that it will allow designers and engineers to consider customer requirements issues, ergonomic issues, safety issues and environmental impact early in the design phase, to produce quality products and reduce development time and cost. This Virtual Prototyping Tools will be developed giving due considerations to organisational, human and environmental issues to enhance current work practice in the industry.
