Summary on Grant Application Form |
Gamma TiAL alloys are of strategic importance to the UK aerospace, defence, power generation and automotive industries, where high temperature strength combined with low weight is essential for components such as turbine and compressor blades and turbocharger rotors. However, potential UK users are currently frustrated by the difficulties of procuring of sufficiently high quality and with acceptable deliveries from the very small number of foreign suppliers. The aim of this project is to develop scientifically sound techniques for melting and casting TiAL alloys and thereby provide UK industry with a sound basis for establishing a production facility towards the end of the project. This proposal concerns that optimisation of Induction Skull Melting, the development of techniques for casting defect-free components, and the assessment of prototype castings. The expertise and facilities of the IRC in casting technology, induction skull melting and materials are complemented by the production foundry experience of Trucast Ltd. And the expertise at Greenwich University in computer modelling of magnetic levitation melting and casting defects. The other collaborators (Rolls-Royce, Alstom, DERA) provide engineering expertise and component design and testing in key industrial sectors.
