Summary on Grant Application Form
Critically ill patients in ICU usually develop respiratory failure, and are assisted in their breathing by artificial ventilation. Adjustment of ventilator settings and subsequent'weaning' from the machine are crucial routine management issues. The project aims to provide a computer-based advisor to assist in the weaning process. To facilitate this,a hybrid(quantitative plus qualitative) model of respiratory function of patients in ICU will be elicited and subsequently embedded into a decision-support system for clinicians. An important aspect of the project relates to the use of 'grey-box'modelling approaches which incorporate prior knowledge into their framework.Once having obtained a suitable model for differing patient conditions, best therapeutic advice on ventilator settings can be calulated using the concept of Model Based Predictive Control. This will then form the structure for a computer-based advisory system which will be validated in ICU trials.
