There is increasing evidence for quantum states in conducting materials which fall outside our standard models. These states depend critically on lattice structure and chemical composition and are found in exotic materials in narrow ranges of density. We aim to study examples of such states discovered in our previous EPSRC programme, and carry out a systematic search for new forms of quantum order in pure magnetic or nearly magnetic compounds via precise control of lattic spacing. A principal goal will be to seek descriptions of anomalous metallic states in terms of recently developed models which go beyond Fermi liquid theory, and to investigate the possibility of magnetically mediated superconductivity in systems near ferromagentic or antiferromagnetic transitions. We also wish to carry out a more general search for quantum order at very low temperature via quantum melting of conventional states through precise control of material properties.High precision resistivity and susceptibility measurements would be performed in a wide range of materials between room temperature and 10 mk and at pressures of up to 500 kbar. This broad and time consuming programme would be feasible with the development of the proposed new generation cryosystem.
