The aim of this project is to investigate the application of adaptive control techniques for administration of the minimum amount of respiratory gases and volatile anaesthetic agents required by patients during surgery. At present the control procedure is manual and often results in large drug consumption by the patient which at the same represents a health-risk and increases costs. In this study we propose to design a control system which can automate the adjustments which have to be made to the drugs and gases for a specific anaesthetic state depending on the patients dynamics. Model-Based Adaptive Predictive Control (MBPC) architectures represent one ideal candidate. They are expected to deliver adequate anaesthesia with a minimum amount of breathing gases and anaesthetic agents administered to the patient, this minimising the risk of awake anaesthesia, thereby the patient is aware of the surgeons surgical manipulations, and also reducing costs of expensive drugs.
