The objectives of this proposal are to use frequency stabilised diode lasers to study a variety of processes of both fundamental and applied interest in the areas of both plasma physics and chemistry, and aeronomy. Species in low concentrations in the gas phase will be detected either by absorption in a simple single pass system, or by injection of the diode output into a tuned cavity. Novel techniques will be used for frequency upconverting the near ir operating range of diode lasers into the uv. Examples include the detection of methyl radicals in plasmas used for etching and diamond deposition, and the observation of HONO in the atmosphere. Measurements to be made will include the spatial and temporal dependences of the absolute concentrations of species inside a plasma reactor, and the detectivity limits for a variety of atmospherically important species. The proposal asks for funds for test equipment needed for the laser sources, and this will be augmented by laser diodes supplied by the Joint Initiative by GEC Marconi.
