Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposal is to establish the basic infrastructure required to understand and implement potentially low cost adaptive optical systems for industrial and medical applications and to apply adaptive optics to selected problems. This will be achieved by developing three key areas of expertise at the three University sites (co-ordinated by the ICSIM group) and applying adaptive optics to problems of potential interest to our industrial collaborators. At Edinburgh a deformable mirror device of active area ~1 cm x 1 cm will be constructed by mounting an aluminised silicon nitride membrane mirror ~1 ?m thick over a silicon backplane. The shape of the mirror will be configured by applying appropriate voltage signals to electrodes laid out as a 64 x 64 pixel array on the CMOS silicon backplane. The spatial resolution of the highly reflective, deformable mirror is expected to be ~60 lines per mm and its shape may be reconfigured at an electrical address rate of a few Khz.
