This project is being carried out as part of the SCIOS programme to develop high performance, hybrid electronic-optical computing systems. High speed, low contrast devices with appropriate functionality at each processing node will be fabricated by marrying advanced SEED and CMOS silicon technologies. The microcircuits for the smart processing elements (pixels) are being designed and their performance simulated at Edinburgh and thereafter the devices will be fabricated at AMS using a um CMOS process. Matching SEED arrays of detectors and modulators are being fabricated at Glasgow. The SEED devices 'bump' bonded to the CMOS backplane will form powerful processing arrays which will be incorporated into the demonstrator at Heriot-Watt. High contrast, lower speed SLMs are being designed for reconfiguring optical networks and for use as optical cache memories, (which are accessed 'relatively' infrequently). A ferroelectric liquid crystal over silicon SLM having an array of 128x128 pixels with 8 bit data storage at each pixel is being designed for fabrication at AMS. Post-processing will be developed to enhance the optical performance of the SLM by improving the reflection and contrast ratio of the pixels and the uniformity of the phase flatness across the array for coherent optical systems.
