Summary on Grant Application Form |
Southern Ocean waves penetrate into Antarctic sea ice defining an extremely dynamical sea ice region, known as a marginal ice zone (MIZ), that extends for hundreds of kilometres and regulates climate by affecting air-sea heat and momentum exchanges. In this region, wave and sea ice properties are intimately linked, therefore there is growing demand for an accurate model that describes wave dissipation in sea ice.
Recent modelling efforts and field observations have shown that wave nonlinearity and energy transfer from the wind allow waves to travel farther into the MIZ, contrary to current modelling paradigms implemented in climate and ocean models. Here we aim to provide a model that accounts for these effects and to show its effectiveness in reproducing field observations.
